Wildland Fire

I fought wildland fire for the Oregon Department of Forestry from 1998 to 2003 during the summers. During the summer of 2002 I worked at the Public Affairs office in Salem, OR. During that time I had the opportunity to become qualified as a Fire Information Officer, and subsequently, I spent 15 days on the Florence Fire, which become known as the "Biscuit Fire," after it burned in 500,000 acres of Southern Oregon. However, I didn't have my good camera then, so instead all I can offer is these photos from the following summer when I visited Keno and Klamath Falls for some smaller industrial- and vehicle-caused fires.

I drove past the lake during a hatch of midges. You should have seen the windshield.

My engine partner douses a "hot spot" during the night shift. At night, headlamps are a necessity.
